MENU!

Baby Showers and Blessingways are often sooo much about food!
So how to celebrate the fantastic food that is breastmilk at a party without serving Breastmilk ice cream?

In the glass....

Liquid Gold Mammar-itas!!!!
A vitamin rich and healthy sweet drink that pays tribute to the wonder food colostrum: the first milk that the breast produces after babe is born! Protects babes digestion for a lifetime, as well as keeping their blood sugars healthy!
What you need:
A blender
Bright yellow and orange Organic fruits- mangoes, bananas, pineapple, apple, oranges....
Ice
Optional: Honey or Maple syrup, Unsweetened Juice or Sparkling Water

  • Wash, peel, and coarsely chop your fruits and toss into the blender and blend until smooth.  If the mixture is REALLY thick, add a little bit of unsweetened apple or orange juice or even a bit of fizzy water.
  • Add ice and blend again. if you need more sweetness add a bit of honey or maple syrup to taste.
A great drink to make throughout the party, every time a little different, which reflects the variability of breastmilk, with every meal for babe being a bit different, based on the meals of the breastfeeding parent.

Serve in breast-reminiscent Martini or Wine glasses!
Ifyou are feeling creative you can colour nipples onto the bottom of the glass and top of the stem with a coloured permanent marker. This will wash off with rubbing alcohol later, and could even be a "shower craft" for guests to decorate their glasses as breasts and will help people not get their glasses mixed up.

PARTY PARTICIPATION SUGGESTION:
Ask all the guests to bring orange and yellow fruits to the party to help contribute to the perfect mix of Liquid Gold Mamaritas!

For the Table...

BBQ Steam Buns! They look and even kind of feel like Mammary glands!  And like the real thing they are full of yummy goodness, usually veggies, meat, and seasonings. Protien, fat and vitamins! You can find these at your local Asian Bakery or you  can make them yourself if you have time.

These ones are from Allrecipes.com

Cabbage leaves are often used if breasts become engorged during the first days after babe arrives. They are also the excellent starting point of cabbage rolls! Hunt down a friend and or local granny to make some for the party. Wanna be extra swanky? Roll them so they are more round than long, and resemble the breast all the more!
Looking for a lighter or more warm weather suited cabbage roll? The asian inspired variety is filled will greated veggies, and other good things and is a great way to feast on breast-shaped cabbage-wrapped goodness!
We like these recipes from "Girl Interrupted Eating"
Tasty and a great learning moment about a very effective folk remedy for one of the challenges that can happen while breastfeeding is being established.

Something Sweet.... Life is short eat dessert first and breastfeed!
Cookies, Cupcakes and muffins are alll the handy shape of the multitalented Mammary glad!
Add a cherry, blueberry or a chocolate chip to the centres to symbolize the nipple and you're all set to celebrate!

Decorating roundish cookies with icing and candies can create a kaleidoscope of breasts and by adding different amounts of cocoa or fruit purés to the dough you can make all the colours to reflect the skin tones of all the nursing parents around the world. (photos courtesy of Kim Smith)

Breast Meringues!
Easy to make. Oh so Tasty. And a great tribute to Breastfeeding that also just happens to be gluten Free!
Simply whip up Egg Whites with a pinch of cream of tartar until stiff. Then add sweetener to taste, I use maple syrup, but honey or confectioners sugar works great too. Beat again after adding sweetener to get the meringue stiff again.
Divide the meringue into separate parts and add various amounts of cocoa to each bowl and beat in. This Creates a variety of Skin and nipple tones to work with.
Fill a plastic bag or a piping bag with meringue and pipe it onto breast-shapes. If you have a dehyrdrator your can form the breasts on either "fruit roll up" liners or parchment paper cut to fit the trays. If you are using your oven, line cookie sheets with parchment and create your breast meringues there. Use darker coloured meringue to create areolas and nipples on each of the breasts. Very the shape and size of each one to represent the diversity that bodies offer to feed our next generation.
If you are using a dehydrator, allow at least a few hours for the cookies to cook and dry, this will depend on your dehydrator as well as the humidity where you live. If you are using your oven, set it VERY low, 200F or so and start checking the cookies every 15 minutes after about 2 hours. If you have convection, this will be much faster, so divide by 2.
Meringues should be light and crispy and dry. The oven will darken the meringue more than the dehydrator, so you may want to take that into consideration when you are adding cocoa or other things to colour your cookies.
